Cellulite Reduction Diet: A Potassium-Sodium Connection?

I started reading a book from the library titled Beyond Cellulite: Nicole Ronsard’s Ultimate Strategy to Slim, Firm and Reshape Your Lower Bodyand one theme that I find very interesting is the emphasis that she places on having the correct potassium-sodium balance for reducing cellulite.

The explanation goes something like this:

Capillaries bring nutrients to cells by diffusing them into the intercelluar fluid where cells exist. Cells intake nutrients through the fluid. Lymphatic fluid takes cell waste away through the same intercelluar fluid and transports waste to the lymph nodes. These fluids, intercelluar and lymph, where all of this nutrient-waste exchange is happening, needs to stay ‘clean’ so they can work in the most efficient manner.

The intercelluar fluid and the lymph become inefficient and ineffective when they become too thick and the cause of that is an imbalance in sodium and potassium levels. Too much sodium attracts excess water and makes the intercelluar fluid and the lymph viscous.

When the intercelluar fluid starts getting too thick, it begins to spread the cell tissue apart and it spreads the cells further away from the capillaries.  The exchange of wastes and nutrients becomes slow and clogged. This spreading of the tissue and the inefficieny of the nutrient-waste system begins the formation of cellulite.

By reducing sodium intake and increasing intake of potassium-rich foods, one can begin to reverse this clogging and start to eliminate excess fluid. Reducing excess fluid will result in a less viscous intercelluar fluid and lymph which will begin to bring the cellular tissue closer to together because the fluid will be cleaner. The result is smoother skin.

Well, I don’t know if the above is true, but I’m willing to give it a shot. I admit I’m a little heavy on the salt shaker, so there couldn’t be any harm in reducing my salt intake and increasing intake of some potassium-rich foods like bananas, potatoes, cantaloupe and watermelon.

If it doesn’t work, then I’ll be better off anyway without the excess salt and if it does work, then that’s one step closer to being cellulite-free.
